We got word this week that musician and philanthropist Peter Buffet and R&B/pop star Akon are releasing a new track titled “Blood Into Gold” this Wednesday, March 25th. The song was written to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It will be performed live at the United Nation’s General Assembly Hall on Wednesday night.

So are we.  That’s why we’re introducing Echoing Green’s first t-shirt design contest. But it’s not any old design contest... we're crowdsourcing it with our friends over at crowdSPRING.com.  Each entry in the contest is made public on their website, and if you sign up for an account, you can help us decide by voting for your favorites. 

2006 Echoing Green Fellow Sari Bashi’s organization Gisha recently commissioned Yoni Goodman, Director of Animation for the Academy Award-nominated film "Waltz with Bashir,” to make a short film about life in the Gaza Strip. The result is “Closed Zone,” a powerful 90 second animated film.

Written by the Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Kidder, the book chronicles the life and impact of famed social entrepreneur Dr. Paul Farmer and his organization, Partners in Health. Their model is to partner with poor communities to combat both disease and poverty.

George Bernard Shaw once wrote, “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.” Those unreasonable people are now called social entrepreneurs, the ones we at Echoing Green work to identify and support everyday.  Thus, we were elated to hear about a book written by John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan, titled The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets That Change The World. The book is a fantastic read, as it describes how these individuals are changing the way the world look
